Martha Eddy, CMA, CTBMD, DEP, EdD, MFLCI, RSDE, RSMT Dr. Martha Eddy is a passionate advocate for health and creative expression through somatic awareness and active embodiment, with a lifelong commitment to the art of dance. Her somatic system of dance, BodyMind Dancing, is 40 years old, educates people to become Registered Somatic Dance Educators and has been cited in 2021 in both Dance Magazine and the NY Times as a way to work through the pandemic's stresses. She began her studies with Irmgard Bartenieff and Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen in the 1970s and after 10 years of teaching in their respective certification programs - the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies and the School For Body-Mind Centering, she developed her own amalgam certification program blending aspects of LMA and BMC(r). This program focused on one-to-one movement education, therapy, and coaching, using creative processes and a social justice lens. She named it the Somatic Movement Therapy Training (SMTT) in 1991, and brought it to the Bay Area where she and Carol Swann co-founded Moving On Center- school of participatory arts and somatic research, in 1994 with the taglines - we begin with the body, bridging somatics with social change. At the same time, she began her 15-year tenure on the board of the somatic movement professional's association for whom she also served as president. As a board member she advocated for the words somatic and education to be brought into its name — it is now the International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association - ISMETA.org. Once the word somatic became more widely used she needed to specify the distinct nature of her Somatic Movement Therapy Training, now calling it Dynamic Embodiment-SMT. During this time she began her cross case analysis of 40 different somatic movemnnet systems and from the emergent findings wrote the book Mindful Movement the evolution of the somatic arts and conscious action. After 15 years of on-going research it was published in 2016 and again in 2017.
Upon returning to NYC in 1999, she was invited to design an movement program suited for alleviating the symptoms of cancer treatement. Moving For Life DanceExercise for Health began with a focus on breast cancer recovery, and has expanded to address the physiological needs of people affected by any type of cancer as well as the challenges of balance, pain, reduced range of motion, fatigue and mental changes experienced by many older adults. Moving For Life has been featured on public radio and almost all major news networks since 2011, and as of 2014 is a non-profit offering free classes for all NYers and those who take the class online from around the world. There are Moving For Life Certified Instructors, MFLCIs in many places around the world. Both BodyMind Dancing and Moving For Life are centered in her Dynamic Embodiment principles based in her knowledge as an Exercise Physiologist, Doctor of Movement Science, Registered Somatic Movement Therapist, and dance educator. She has taught dance education at Columbia, New York and, Princeton Universities, BodyMind Cultural Studies for the State University of New York, Kinesiology at San Francisco State University and the art of somatic dancing including BodyMind Dancing in numerous colleges. She sits on doctoral committees and supervises post-doctorates often. In 2017, she was named Outstanding Dance Educator by the National Dance Education Organization in the USA. She loves to perform when invited.
Fun Facts: She was featured for a duet with Stephen Petronio Company in the NY Times. She has been rated as one of the top ten speakers for The Embodiment Conference 2018, and she was keynote speaker/facilitator for their Creative Channel in 2020.
